About the castle

Overlooking the Indrois valley, Montrésor Castle harmoniously blends medieval fortress and Renaissance elegance.

Founded in the 11th century by Foulques Nerra, the powerful Count of Anjou, it was remodelled in the 15th century by Imbert de Batarnay, advisor to the kings of France. In the 19th century, the château enjoyed a new lease of life thanks to Polish Count Xavier Branicki, a close associate of Napoleon III, who restored it with great refinement and turned it into a place of Franco-Polish remembrance.

Listed as a historic monument, the castle retains its rich furnishings and an exceptional collection of paintings, offering an intimate atmosphere frozen in time.
